The short answer
In Australia, matchmaking costs anywhere from about A$65 per introduction at pay-per-date services to several thousand dollars a year for agency membership, and past A$15,000 for a private, consultant-led search.
Membership agencies reported by ABC News charged between about A$5,000 and A$8,000 a year. Many premium agencies do not publish their fees at all.
Search for the cost of a matchmaker and most of what comes back is American: US agencies, US dollars and headline figures that have little to do with the Australian market.
This guide sets out what Australian services actually charge, using published prices and reporting we can point to, each dated. Where a figure is old or comes from a single example, we say so. Prices change, and the best check is always the agency’s own written terms.

Four models, and very different prices for each.
Australian matchmaking falls into four broad models. The price follows the model more than the city: what you are paying for is either access to a pool of members, or a person’s time and judgement on your behalf.

Figures are in Australian dollars. Some include GST and some do not; ask. ABC News described the overall range for agency membership as “a few thousand dollars to upwards of $15,000”.
The six-figure numbers in headlines are a different market. A matchmaker profiled by Fortune in August 2026 charges US$35,000 to more than US$100,000 for six months, and one large US firm puts its high-end tier at US$20,000 to US$100,000 or more [6][7]. Those are useful for context and not much else: converted to Australian dollars they describe a handful of bespoke international searches, not what most Australians pay.
Why so few agencies publish their fees
Many premium agencies set fees in a first consultation rather than on their website. One of the country’s best-known agencies guarantees six matches in six months on its FAQ page, but gives no price [5].
There are fair reasons for this. A search for a 45-year-old in inner Melbourne is not the same piece of work as a search for someone with children, a demanding public role and particular requirements. But the effect is that you cannot compare agencies without sitting through a sales conversation with each one.
If an agency will not tell you its price before you meet, ask for it in writing before you commit.
What drives the price
Whatever the model, the same handful of factors decides where a service sits in the range.
Most of what a consultant-led fee pays for is time: interviews, preparation and follow-up.

What exactly is included?
How many introductions, over what term, and what happens when the term ends.

Is the price inclusive of GST and card fees?
ABC News reported one client whose A$5,000 membership arrived with an undisclosed card surcharge of about A$130 [1].

How are members verified?
Identity checks, a live verification session, police checks, or a questionnaire alone.

Who makes my introductions, and will I meet them?
A named consultant who interviews you is a different service from a database match.

How many active members suit my age range and city?
A large national list means little if few members are in your stage of life, or nearby.

Can I pause?
Work, travel and family change. Check whether the term stops while you are unavailable.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Get it in writing, including what happens if you meet someone early.

What does “success” mean in the contract?
Some memberships end at a defined point, such as a relationship of a certain length. Know the definition before you sign.
On contracts
The ACCC advises reading and understanding a contract’s terms before you accept it. Automatic cooling-off rights mainly apply to unsolicited sales, such as door-to-door and telemarketing, so do not assume one exists; check whether the contract offers one [8]. The fairer comparison is rarely apps against a matchmaker on price. It is the cost of your time, and of years spent on introductions that were never likely to work, against a fee for someone to do that filtering well.

How much does a matchmaker cost in Sydney?

Are matchmakers worth the money?
They can be if you want a long-term partner, have little time, value privacy and want an experienced second opinion on who suits you. They are rarely worth it if you want volume or something casual, are not yet ready, or expect a guaranteed outcome. No honest service can promise a partner.
Why do some matchmakers charge $30,000 or more?
Those figures mostly come from the United States, where some firms run bespoke searches that go well beyond their own members, with dedicated teams and travel. In Australia, reported agency membership has typically ranged from a few thousand dollars to upwards of A$15,000.
Do men and women pay the same?
