Questions, answered
A matchmaker is a person who chooses introductions for you after getting to know you. An introduction agency is a business that introduces its members to one another, usually through consultants. “Dating agency” is the everyday name for the same kind of business. Dating apps and sites let you search and choose for yourself.
In Victoria, introduction agents are covered by specific consumer rules, including a three-business-day cooling-off period on introduction agreements.
The words are used loosely, often interchangeably, and sometimes to make a service sound more personal than it is. The useful question is not what a business calls itself, but who does the choosing, how people are verified and what you are paying for.
What each one usually means in Australia.
The differences that matter most are who chooses, how you pay and how carefully people are checked.

Every service is covered by the Australian Consumer Law, which requires services to be provided with due care and skill. Beyond that, the rules depend on the state.
Consumer Affairs Victoria treats an introduction agent as a business offering a service that matches people, or provides their details, for personal relationships or social outings [3]. No general licence is needed, but introduction agreements must follow specific rules [3][4]:
New South Wales has no introduction-agency rules of its own. NSW Fair Trading advises identifying the business and its address, and understanding the services, introductions and costs, before you sign up; the Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply [7].
Queensland also regulates introduction and dating agencies [8]. In other states, check the contract itself for any cooling-off or cancellation terms.

Apps and events are not lesser versions of an agency; they are different tools. Apps suit people who want to meet widely and enjoy the process of searching. Events suit people who like meeting in a group and would rather judge chemistry in person than on a screen. Both are inexpensive, and neither involves anyone vouching for the people you meet.
The useful question is not what a service calls itself, but who does the choosing.
For people looking for a long-term partner, three things tend to matter more than the label.

Whatever the name on the door, look for the person who will do the choosing.
We describe TrustMatch as a private introductions practice. In the terms above, it is consultant-led matchmaking: every introduction is chosen by a matching consultant who has interviewed you, not by an algorithm or a search you run yourself.
Membership is selective and every application is reviewed personally.
In Melbourne, our members live and work from the CBD and Southbank to South Yarra, Toorak and Brighton and beyond. Matchmaking in Melbourne. In Sydney, introductions are arranged from the CBD to Double Bay, Mosman, the North Shore and wider Sydney. Matchmaking in Sydney.

A business that introduces its members to one another for relationships or social outings, usually through consultants who match people. In Victoria, introduction agents are covered by specific consumer rules.
A matchmaker is a person who gets to know you and chooses introductions on your behalf. A dating agency is a business that introduces its members, sometimes through consultants and sometimes through questionnaires and databases. Many agencies employ matchmakers, so the difference lies in how personal the matching is.
All are covered by the Australian Consumer Law. Victoria also has specific rules for introduction agreements, including written terms, a three-business-day cooling-off period and a general limit of 30 per cent on upfront payments. Queensland also regulates introduction agencies; New South Wales relies on the general consumer law.
In Victoria, yes: you can withdraw from an introduction agreement within three business days by written notice, and the agent must refund your money within seven days, less the smaller of $250 or 10 per cent of the price. Elsewhere, check the contract for its own cooling-off or cancellation terms.
Not usually. An app lets you search and choose for yourself; an agency introduces its members to one another. Some apps offer premium features, but no one chooses introductions on your behalf.
For most people who want something lasting and have little time, a consultant-led service is the better fit: someone who interviews you, verifies every member and chooses each introduction. Apps and events suit a wider, more casual search. How to choose a matchmaker.
